What is the world population? It is 7.8 Billion as of 2020.

How many connected devices are there on earth? More than 26 Billion. By the year 2025, it is expected to reach 75 Billion connected devices.

This data shows the opportunities in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Embedded Systems.

Smart cars providing you the shortest route or smartwatch which is tracking your daily activities, IoT represents billions of devices around us. It is possible to convert anything as small as a pill to a giant ship into IoT.

What are the different job profiles in Embedded Systems and the Internet of Things, and the required skill set?

IoT is a giant network of connected devices, and it works in four layers of technology. Each of these four layers offers different job profiles.

Analytics

The fourth and final layer is IoT Analytics. This layer brings in the greatest value in an IoT application. This layer converts raw data into actionable business insights for improving business operations or to perform predictive maintenance using machine learning algorithms. This layer requires knowledge in the field of data science and artificial intelligence. And the career paths can be Data Science Engineers, Data Scientists, etc.

What is the expected salary in the Internet of Things domain at the entry-level?

The IoT India Salary Study year 2017 states that the salary of IoT professionals in India is nearly 76% higher than that of IT professionals. According to payscale.com, the mean salary for an entry-level job with less than one year of experience is Rs. 3.07 lacs. These entry-level jobs in embedded systems lead to many career paths later: Senior Electronics Design Engineer, Senior Embedded Software / Firmware Engineer, Senior Software Engineer, then Principal Engineer — Electronics / Analog and Mixed-Signal Design.

What are the different application areas of IoT?

IoT finds its application in many areas, some of the major application areas are mentioned here:

  • Home

IoT Technology offers many home automation solutions which add richness and security to our lives, some of these applications are Lighting Control, Smart Home Appliances, Improved Home Safety & Security, Home Air Quality Monitoring, Natural Language-based Voice Assistants, Smart Locks, etc.

  • Industry
  1. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is used across several industries, such as manufacturing (Industry 4.0), logistics, oil and gas, transportation, energy, mining, aviation, and other industrial sectors. Some use cases of IIoT optimization of operational efficiency, automation, and predictive maintenance.
  2. Other major application areas of IoT are health, transportation, and logistics, retail, office automation, wildlife monitoring, etc.

What is the future of IoT?

Some reasons why IoT will shape the future.

  • Phenomenal growth rate

Cision, PR Newswire states that the IoT market is showing an unbelievable CAGR of 24.7%, and big companies such as Google, Cisco, Microsoft, Dell, Facebook, Apple, among others are investing heavily in IoT.

  • 94% of businesses will use IoT by the end of 2021

According to a new report from Microsoft, almost all businesses will use some form of IoT by the end of 2021 including private and government organizations.

  • $1.1 Trillion will be spent on IoT by 2023

Statista says the projected global IoT spending is valued at over 1.1 trillion dollars and has been steadily growing. IoT has also demonstrated the potential to save us money, with driverless cars generating over 5.6 trillion dollars in savings worldwide, and IoT in agricultural technologies set to cut food prices nearly in half by 2050.

Is there enough room for an aspirant engineer?

Yes, IoT Magazine reports that nearly all IoT Adopters — 97% — have security concerns and 38% cite complexity and technical challenges in using IoT. The lack of talent in this domain is self-evident, with 47% of IoT adopters stating that training and talent are not enough. The lack of talent makes more room for future engineers to come and contribute to this amazing world.
